October 25 | The Festival of the Reformation

At the festival of the Reformation we remember the heart of Christian faith and discipleship: the gospel of Christ, which is all grace. By the end of the 17th century, many Lutheran congregations observed the posting of the Ninety-five Theses by Martin Luther, German priest, theologian, seminary professor, hymn writer, husband, and father (1483-1546). The Theses were a summary of concerns and abuses in the church of Luther’s time, and a challenge from Luther to follow the gospel. This posting, offered on the church in Wittenberg, Germany, was done on October 31, the eve of the Feast of All Saints’ (all Hallows’ Eve) as many would see it when attending Mass on the Feast Day, November 1. In our time, we pray that the Holy Spirit continues to empower the whole church in our witness. The primary church color red reminds us of the fire, strength, and challenge of the Holy Spirit. – Cantor Bryan Rust
